Even before pregnancy, most women have experienced what it’s like to intensely long for a specific food, flavor or scent, such as chocolate, or freshly brewed coffee. While craving odd tastes, smells, textures and combinations of food items is very common during pregnancy, no one can really agree on what causes these odd desires. Some say that cravings may be the body’s way of signaling women that some vitamins and minerals are missing in their diet. Others believe that cravings are the result of changing hormones or perhaps fulfill an emotional need.
Sometimes, very usual cravings for items that aren’t normally considered food may indicate that your body is trying to replace lost nutrients such as iron, zinc or copper, and is a condition known as pica.

Some pregnant women report being tempted by chalk dust, while others prefer to lick or suck on whole sticks of the stuff. Some women even eat whole pieces of chalk while they are pregnant. Eating tums and similar antacid products might help stave off the temptation, and add some beneficial calcium to your diet!
