When you’re expecting, your hormones are in a constant state of flux, and this leads to many changes in your body and its natural rhythms. When you are pregnant, your appetite changes because of varying levels of various hormones in your body.
Not only will you feel hungrier, but it’s likely that you will experience cravings for foods that seem strange to you because they are different from your usual diet. You might even develop a taste for unusual combinations of ingredients, or develop an aversion to foods that you once enjoyed.
Even Celebrities get strange food cravings when they are pregnant. According to an article at Mental Floss, Rebecca Romijn craved a little soy-based cream cheese, with her lemonade! Gwen Stefani is reported to have craved hot tabasco sauce so much while pregnant that she began to tote a bottle of it around with her so that she could sprinkle some on everything that she ate!
Rest assured that while food cravings and aversions may seem odd to you, it is a quite common experience for many pregnant women. While you’ve likely heard of pregnant women craving pickles and ice cream together, there are other weird food cravings that women experience during their pregnancy. The following is a list of some of the strangest weird food pregnancy cravings.
Unusual Food Combinations
Some women crave strange combinations of food while they are pregnant. Either the flavors or textures of the ingredients are unusual when they are mixed together. A perfect example of this is when some pregnant women mix sour cream, onions and mustard together and then eat it without any additional toppings! Another strange craving is wanting to eat a fresh salad topped with – baked beans!
Hot and Spicy with a Twist
It’s also not uncommon for pregnant women to crave hot and spicy foods, or to combine these foods with other ingredients that don’t seem to go with them. For example, instead of just craving a spicy chili or burrito, some women might crave ice cream, or even fruits, topped with jalapeno peppers or other spicy ingredients.
Unusual Amounts of Food
Sometimes food cravings don’t involve strange foods, or weird combinations. When this happens, a pregnant woman might crave a seemingly normal food, such as watermelon, but crave it all of the time and eat it at every meal, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or supper.
Sour and Salty
Some pregnant women develop cravings for foods that are both sour and salty. Wanting to eat lots of lemons or oranges, with lots of salt, is a common way to satisfy this urge. Other pregnant women report eating lots of sauerkraut or olives to satisfy this need. A similar craving is to have dill pickles with either sardines or anchovies, together, because of the salty and sour flavor as well as the extra crunchy texture.
Sweet and Salty
Craving foods that are sweet and salty is also quite typical of the food cravings that pregnant women must face. Some satisfy this urge by dipping their potato chips or pretzels into some melted chocolate.
Eating at Unusual Times
Another strange food craving experienced during pregnancy is to be hungry at odd times. In this type of food craving pregnant women report waking up at all hours of the night craving food. So, if you’ve been waking up at 3 a.m. wanting to eat an entire jar of pickles, it’s really more normal than you might think!
This strange craving isn’t for food at all, but tasteless, colorless, frozen water. The crunchy texture is likely driving this desire, so you might want to swap the ice for something as equally crunchy, but more nutritious, such as carrot and celery sticks or raw broccoli.
Craving Foods that aren’t Food
Sometimes pregnant women crave to eat items that aren’t actually food. Cigarette ashes, soap and even dirt are common cravings pregnant women may feel when pregnant. Known as pica, if you do find that you are craving a non-food item be certain to consult with your doctor as it may indicate that you have a deficiency in a specific vitamin or mineral.
