Ricotta on the other hand is not recommended to be eaten unless it is made from pasteurized milk. Unpasteurized ricotta can, on the rare occasion, carry the bacteria which can cause listeria. As pregnant women are more susceptible than healthy adults to pick up listeria, it is best to avoid food which may carry the bacteria.
Eating ricotta which is cooked in foods such as lasagne is generally thought safe for pregnant women as it is considered a low-risk food. Make sure it is cooked fully and served immediately.
Cheese is a great source of protein and calcium and recommended for pregnant women so it is good to know that some varieties of cheese are recommended by your doctor.
