It Works! Global offers a body contouring system which they claim ‘tightens, tones and firms’, ‘miminizes cellulite’ and ‘improves skin texture’, and with the claim of ‘results in as little as 45 minutes’, it is no wonder it’s a popular option in the mom community.
The Ultimate Body Applicator is It Works! Global’s main product and is essentially a non-woven cloth wrap that has been infused with a plant based formula to bring about what they claim is tightening, toning and firming. This product is created to be used alongside the defining gel and the fab wrap, which is used to hold the cloth wrap in place; all of which can be purchased individually or as a set.
The contouring products claim to work by breaking down and detoxing the fat cells releasing them into the lymphatic system and ultimately out of the body. The gel enters through the pores and basically attacks the toxins. As it is a detoxing process, it is important that if you do choose to use them when pregnant or breastfeeding, you drink enough water to stay hydrated and healthy for your baby during and after the wrapping process.
Even though they are made with natural ingredients, It Works! stipulates quite clearly that the body applicator and the defining gel are not recommended for pregnant or nursing women. Why? Quite simply, It Works! are concerned that due to the high concentration of product the bay may inadvertently be exposed either during development or while being breastfed. The products themselves have not been tested by the FDA on nursing or pregnant mothers and therefore the company is not exactly sure of the outcome should this be the case.
Actual ingredients used in the applicator:
Water (Aqua), Glucose, Caprylic /Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Alcohol Denat., Stearic Acid, Stearyl Alcohol, Ceteareth 12, Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract, Urea, Centella asiatica (Hydrocotyl) Leaf Extract, Camellia sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Fucus vesiculosus (Bladderwrack) Thalle Extract, Hedera helix (Ivy) Leaf Extract, Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) Leaf/Stem Extract, Ruscus aculeatus (Butchers Broom) Root Extract, Paullinia cupana (Guarana) Seed Extract, Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Decyl Oleate, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG 7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Tocopheryl Acetate, TEA-Hydroiodide, Methylsilanol Mannuronate, Menthol, Camphor, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol, Retinyl Palmitate, Triethanolamine, Carbomer, Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Eucalyptus globulus (Eucalyptus) Leaf Oil, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbic Acid, BHT, Limonene and Linalool.
While safe to use at an initial glance, they were formulated with an adult in mind and may adversely affect your nursing baby if misused. If you wrap and are concerned about the risk to baby, watch him or her for signs of uneasiness, fussiness and nausea and take him to your doctor if you feel your baby may be at risk. Some moms actually find the wraps dry up their milk supply, but again, this does not happen to everyone.
Despite these warnings and side effects, many breastfeeding and even pregnant moms are fans of the product and choose to use it regardless of It Works! Global’s strict company policy. Since they seemingly err on the side of caution, they make reference to the fact that the wraps will only harm the baby if they are directly placed on the breast area when the baby is being breastfed. This can be an issue for mothers who choose to use the wraps to give their breasts a ‘lift’ or remove stretchmarks. If you are concerned about it, the safest advice is to see your doctor and ask for their opinion on the product itself. Many moms have reported that their doctor or pediatrician has given the okay to use the products if they are breastfeeding although it is recommended not to keep the product on during the actual feeding itself. There are many women who still wrap their legs, for example, during pregnancy and others who wrap their tummy and legs while breastfeeding.
Not everyone who uses the products achieves their desired results, therefore weigh that into the equation when thinking about whether or not to use it. It Works! Global’s fine print reads, “the results can and will vary.” Feedback online about the company and their products support this claim.
Although the contour products may or may not be suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding moms, It Works Global other products including their entire skin care line, stretch mark cream and facial wraps which are perfectly safe for mom and mom-to-be.
ItWorks! Greens While Pregnant or Breastfeeding
Many pregnant and nursing moms, and even It Works! Global’s representatives, recommend the popular Greens range to improve the quality of breast milk, however, be aware that they do contain the ingredient white willow bark. White willow bark acts a lot like aspirin which is not recommended throughout pregnancy or even when breastfeeding. Although aspirin can be transferred through the breast milk causing Reye’s Syndrome, it is not actually known whether salicylate found in white willow bark can cause similar effects. Again it is best to take caution and speak to your doctor. Reye’s Syndrome is a rare condition that affects the brain and the liver and is brought on by taking aspirin. Both the World Health Organization Working Group on Human Lactation and the National Reye’s Syndrome Foundation considers the taking of aspirin as unsafe for nursing moms. Note also that if you are on blood thinners then taking Greens is not recommended.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to look and feel your best during pregnancy and the months that follow; using these products when breastfeeding or even pregnant are very much a personal choice. Do your research, print out the ingredient list and check with your doctor. Regardless of your final decision, you can at least feel that you made it from an educated perspective.
